The Ben Tre Province Education and Training Department has ordered education agencies to penalize a teacher who punished a student with a regiment of physical drills that left him unable to walk.

Seventh grader Nguyen Bao Son at the Mekong Delta province’s My Hoa School was punished by his teacher for acting up in an English class on October 2, fellow students said.

His teacher, whose name has not been disclosed, forced Son to sit down on the floor and stand up hundreds of times while holding on to his ears, according to classmates.

On about the 250th repetition, Son collapsed, they said.

He is now under treatment for muscle injuries in his thighs and legs at Nguyen Dinh Chieu General Hospital.

Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Hieu from the hospital said Sunday, “Son’s health has not improved much. He is not able to walk yet.”

Son has not attended school since the incident.

He has been in the hospital since last Friday, after the pains in his legs had not subsisted.

Head of the Ben Tre Education and Training Department Le Ngoc Buu said the punishment by the teacher was “unacceptable.”

Local administrator Le Thi Be said she and local authorities disapproved of the way the teacher had treated the student. She said agencies had asked the school to penalize the teacher harshly.
